Apple creates a custom iPhone-based camera for Formula 1 movie filming

For the production of the upcoming Formula 1 film directed by Joseph Kosinski, Apple developed a specialized camera module capable of capturing the intensity and speed of racing with cinematic quality. This was reported by GizmoChina.

The Limitations of Traditional Cameras

Conventional cameras used in Formula 1 broadcasts are not suited for filmmaking due to their limited resolution and restricted image processing capabilities. To address this, Apple engineers created a compact module based on the components of the iPhone 15 Pro — including its 48-megapixel sensor and A17 Pro chip.

Technical Highlights of the Module

The custom camera features a built-in battery and neutral density (ND) filters, which allow for precise control of light exposure — giving filmmakers more flexibility during post-production. It runs a specially adapted version of iOS that supports shooting in the professional ProRes Log format. This format produces a “flat” image ideal for color grading and seamless integration with footage captured on high-end cinema cameras such as Arri.

To meet the safety standards of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), the module contains no wireless components. The camera was controlled via an iPad connected through USB-C, using a dedicated app that allowed real-time adjustments to frame rate, exposure, and white balance.

Tested Under Real Race Conditions

The prototype was rigorously tested during actual Formula 1 races in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. It proved to be exceptionally durable, withstanding intense vibrations, impacts, and high temperatures — outperforming traditional broadcast camera systems used in F1.

The development of this camera module led to new features in the iPhone 15 Pro. These include support for the Log format and Academy Color Encoding System (ACES) color space, both valuable tools for professional filmmakers. These innovations reflect Apple’s commitment to empowering creatives with cutting-edge technology.

Using this customized iPhone-based camera allowed for the capture of unprecedented cockpit shots, offering viewers a deeply immersive experience. It is scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 27, 2025, and will later stream on Apple TV+.
