Short video service TikTok may be getting a new search feature using generative AI. The feature is called Search Highlights, and it's already being tested.
As The Verge reports, a snippet of AI-generated results appears at the top of some TikTok search results pages. Clicking on it will open a new page with a longer answer, which also states that the results were generated using ChatGPT and that TikTok displays content "when the algorithm deems it relevant to the user's search query."
For now, this feature is limited, and not all queries will provide AI-generated search results.
As The Verge emphasizes, the service already has a similar function, but it is not labeled as using AI, and it is not clear where the information that is provided there comes from. TikTok has not yet responded to the resource’s request for comments on this matter.
Recently, some users have begun to use the video service as a search engine. It seems that TikTok developers are trying to make sure that users can actually find answers to their questions in the application. Moreover, TikTok appears to be adding AI search results above creators' content to further entice audiences to use the video service.
