Remake of the legendary Baldur’s Gate 2 is reportedly in development — original co-creator returns

According to PC Gamer, Wizards of the Coast is working on a full remake of the classic RPG Baldur's Gate II. The project has reportedly brought back Kevin Martens, a former lead designer at BioWare and one of the key creators of the original game.

Who Is Involved

Kevin Martens is a well-known figure in the RPG genre. He worked on Baldur’s Gate II, its expansion Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights, and Mass Effect. He later joined Blizzard Entertainment, where he worked on Diablo III.

He is currently collaborating with Wizards of the Coast through Archetype Entertainment on the upcoming game Exodus.

According to a source familiar with the project, Martens is already actively involved in the development of the Baldur’s Gate II remake. There is also strong reason to believe that a remake of the original Baldur's Gate is being developed at the same time, since the second game is a direct continuation of the first.

What to Expect

The original Baldur’s Gate games are known for their massive scope, deep storytelling, nonlinear quests, and classic Dungeons & Dragons gameplay featuring a real-time-with-pause combat system.

At this stage, it remains unclear how radically the remake will change the formula. One of the biggest questions is whether the developers will preserve the original combat system or adopt a fully turn-based approach similar to Baldur's Gate 3. Many longtime fans hope for a compromise: real-time-with-pause combat alongside an optional turn-based mode.

Why It Matters

Following the enormous success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast, has been looking for ways to build on the franchise’s popularity. Remakes of the original games would be a logical and relatively low-risk move, as the stories, characters, and world of the Forgotten Realms setting are already well established.
