19:23 25 May, 2026The space simulator Star Citizen has surpassed the historic milestone of $1 billion raised through crowdfunding and in-game sales. The announcement was made by developer Cloud Imperium Games.
The project, which began in 2012, remains one of the most ambitious and longest-running developments in the gaming industry.
Over 14 years of development, the game has attracted more than 6.5 million registered users. According to studio head Chris Roberts, all collected funds have been directed toward the game’s development and infrastructure.
Chris Roberts has repeatedly argued that creating a space simulator of this scale within a traditional publisher-driven model would have been nearly impossible due to the enormous development timeline and costs involved.
He stated that even after the release of version 1.0, the project will continue evolving actively. Roberts compared the planned long-term support for Star Citizen to the lifecycle of World of Warcraft, which remains one of the world’s most popular online games more than 20 years after launch.
Alongside the main game, Cloud Imperium Games is also finishing work on the single-player story campaign Squadron 42, which takes place within the Star Citizen universe.
According to Roberts, the project is in the final stages of production and is expected to launch before the end of 2026.
However, he acknowledged that the release could still be delayed. One possible reason mentioned is the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, which could significantly divert the attention of the gaming audience.
Star Citizen has long become a symbol of both extraordinary ambition and prolonged development. The project is regularly criticized for repeated delays and its enormous budget.
Nevertheless, it continues to attract new funding thanks to a highly active and dedicated community of players who still believe in the project’s final vision.
Many industry experts describe Star Citizen as a unique experiment in game development, where direct player funding made it possible to create a world that likely could not have existed under a traditional production model.
Over 14 years of development, Star Citizen has raised more than $1 billion through crowdfunding and in-game purchases. The project now has over 6.5 million registered users. Cloud Imperium Games continues work on both the main game and the single-player campaign Squadron 42, which is scheduled for release before the end of 2026. Despite ongoing criticism over delays, Star Citizen remains one of the most ambitious and financially successful crowdfunded projects in video game history.
