OpenAI and Anthropic Unveil Competing Corporate AI Ventures on the Same Day

12:09    5 May, 2026

On Monday, OpenAI finalized the creation of The Deployment Company, a $10 billion joint venture designed to integrate artificial intelligence tools directly into thousands of firms. This marks the largest corporate AI distribution deal of 2026. Hours later, rival firm Anthropic announced its own $1.5 billion joint venture alongside Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, and Hellman & Friedman.

The Deployment Company

OpenAI’s venture, registered as a Delaware LLC and known internally as DeployCo, raised over $4 billion from 19 investors, including TPG, Brookfield Asset Management, Bain Capital, Advent International, Goanna Capital, Dragoneer, and SoftBank. OpenAI itself is contributing up to $1.5 billion—starting with a $500 million equity stake and an option for an additional $1 billion. The company maintains a controlling interest and strategic governance through high-vote shares.

Private equity investors are locked in for five years with a guaranteed annual return of 17.5%. The venture is led by Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s former Chief Operating Officer.

Rather than selling software licenses, The Deployment Company will embed OpenAI engineers directly into client organizations—a model long associated with Palantir. According to Bloomberg, the company’s partners are linked to more than 2,000 portfolio companies across healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and financial services.

Anthropic’s Parallel Move

On the same day, Anthropic officially announced a rival corporate AI services entity backed by Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, Goldman Sachs, and General Atlantic. Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Anthropic are each investing roughly $300 million, while Goldman Sachs is contributing about $150 million—bringing total commitments to approximately $1.5 billion. Anthropic’s new structure is described as a "standalone legal entity with Anthropic’s engineering resources and partner competencies directly integrated into the team." It will implement the Claude AI model into the operations of portfolio companies held by the supporting private equity funds.

The Race for Distribution

As noted by The Next Web, OpenAI’s commercial center of gravity is "shifting from selling products to embedded distribution." Both projects utilize a "forward-deployed engineers" model to close the gap between what AI is capable of and what enterprises actually put into practice.

More is at stake than just revenue. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are weighing initial public offerings (IPOs)—potentially as early as this year—making corporate market penetration a key metric for potential public market investors.
