11:31 24 March, 2026Sony is not stopping with its PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) technology and is already working on the next step—AI-based frame generation. This was revealed by PlayStation 5’s lead system architect, Mark Cerny, in a recent interview. In essence, this means the console will be able to increase visual smoothness without additional hardware load, as AI will “fill in” intermediate frames between those actually rendered by the GPU.
How it will work
The technology is being developed in collaboration with AMD under the codename Project Amethyst. It builds on developments from the upcoming FSR Redstone package, which will include not only upscaling but also frame generation and ray reconstruction. Sony is not creating everything from scratch but is adapting and refining AMD’s existing technology stack to work optimally on consoles.
The principle is similar to what NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR already do: AI analyzes two consecutive frames and generates a new one in between—one that the game engine never actually rendered. As a result, frame rates can increase by two to three times without a loss in quality (and sometimes even with improvements). This approach has long been used on PCs, but on consoles—where hardware is fixed and cannot simply be upgraded—it could become a crucial solution.
Why gamers might not like it
Cerny made it clear that the technology is unlikely to be released before the end of 2026. All signs suggest that AI frame generation will appear either in the PlayStation 6 or in an interim hardware revision (similar to a hypothetical PS5 Pro 2). This means many gamers may see it as yet another attempt to squeeze more performance out of existing hardware rather than delivering a true upgrade.
Some players are already skeptical about frame generation: some notice visual artifacts, while others consider it a “shortcut” that masks hardware limitations. On consoles, which already have strict graphical constraints, this technology could become the primary way to maintain 60 or even 120 FPS in new games—instead of relying on more powerful GPUs.
When and how it will arrive
According to Cerny, the technology is still in active development, and no specific timeline has been given beyond “not before late 2026.” However, the trajectory is clear: PSSR is already integrated into the PS5 Pro, and the next generation (PS6) will almost certainly include AI frame generation as a core part of the graphics pipeline.
AMD is also moving forward—FSR Redstone is expected in the coming years, with built-in support for upscaling, frame generation, and improved ray tracing. Sony is simply among the first to adapt these advancements for the console ecosystem.
