When could Apple release a compact flip-style foldable iPhone?

Apple is considering releasing a foldable smartphone in a clamshell (“flip”) form factor — a vertical model with a square body. This was reported by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. The new device would compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 and Motorola Razr, but its launch will depend on the success of Apple’s first book-style foldable iPhone.

Two different form factors

Apple’s first foldable iPhone (tentatively referred to as the iPhone Fold) is expected to launch in fall 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. It will be a classic book-style device with a 7.8-inch inner display (LTPO OLED, 120 Hz, 4:3 aspect ratio) and a 5.3-inch outer screen. The battery is said to be a record-breaking 5,500 mAh for Apple, using a silicon–carbon anode. The processor will be the A20 Pro, the camera system will feature dual 48 MP sensors, and authentication will rely on Touch ID integrated into the power button (Face ID will not be included). The starting price is expected to be around $2,000, with top configurations possibly exceeding $2,500.

If the Fold model is well received by the market, Apple is prepared to expand the lineup with a compact flip-style device. Gurman emphasizes that no final decision has been made yet — everything will depend on sales performance and user feedback for the first foldable model.

Why Apple might opt for a flip design

The flip form factor has long been popular among users who want a large internal display in a device that remains compact when folded. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr have shown steady demand for this type of smartphone. Apple traditionally enters new markets only when the technology has matured and reliable solutions are available.

In addition, a clamshell foldable would allow Apple to occupy another niche: compact premium foldable devices, which are currently scarce in the high-end segment. This could be Apple’s response to growing interest in alternatives to traditional slab-style smartphones.

In brief

Apple plans to release the book-style foldable iPhone Fold in fall 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. If the model proves successful, the company may add a compact flip-style device — a vertical smartphone designed to compete with the Galaxy Z Flip. The Fold is expected to feature a 7.8-inch LTPO OLED inner display, a 5,500 mAh battery, Touch ID, a dual 48 MP camera system, and the A20 Pro chip, with prices starting at around $2,000. The decision to release a flip-style iPhone has not yet been finalized and will depend on the performance of the first foldable model.
