IGN’s editorial team, in collaboration with the YouTube channel outsidexbox, has completed a large-scale project ranking the 100 best games in the Xbox ecosystem. Once again, Halo 3 by Bungie took first place, just as it did in previous IGN rankings. The editors emphasized that it is not merely a shooter, but a cultural phenomenon that defined an entire era.

Halo 3 as the King of Multiplayer Battles

Halo 3 earned the top spot thanks to its near-perfect balance of a strong story campaign, multiplayer, and innovations such as the Forge map editor. IGN noted that Forge became a precursor to the kind of user-generated content ecosystems later seen in games like Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox. The game was designed around the Xbox 360 and still maintains an active community that continues to create new content nearly 20 years later.

Mass Effect 2 as BioWare at Its Peak

Second place went to Mass Effect 2. The experts highlighted its richly developed companions, the evolution of its combat system toward more action-oriented gameplay, and its dialogue mechanics with context-sensitive responses. They described this game as the point where BioWare reached the peak of its “magic,” combining deep choices with meaningful narrative consequences.

GTA V as an Open World That Never Ages

Rounding out the top three is Grand Theft Auto V. IGN pointed out that Rockstar reinvented the series through its three protagonists with distinct personalities, its multi-stage heists, and the densely detailed city of Los Santos. A major reason for its lasting success, they said, is GTA Online, which has effectively become a standalone platform for millions of players.

In Brief

IGN and outsidexbox have compiled a list of the 100 best Xbox games, with Halo 3 taking first place thanks to its campaign, multiplayer, and the groundbreaking Forge editor. It is followed by Mass Effect 2 and GTA V. The top ten also features Gears of War 3, the early Halo titles, Inside, Forza Horizon 5, and KOTOR. The ranking highlights how the Xbox ecosystem has evolved from traditional console hits to platforms built around user-generated content.
