AI alternative to Microsoft? Elon Musk launches a project with the curious name Macrohard

Elon Musk has announced the creation of a new division within his company xAI, called Macrohard, which will directly compete with Microsoft in the field of software development. He revealed this on his X social media page on August 22, 2025. The project, named with irony but very real in substance, will use artificial intelligence to create software products and cloud services.

Macrohard: AI Instead of Programmers

xAI, founded by Musk on July 12, 2023, filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on August 1, 2025, to register the Macrohard trademark. The name—a play on words referencing Microsoft (micro → macro, soft → hard)—emphasizes the project’s ambition: to completely replace traditional software development methods with autonomous AI agents.

“Companies like Microsoft don’t produce hardware, and their products can be fully modeled using AI,” Musk said when introducing Macrohard. He stressed that the project would focus on software creation, where the entire cycle—from coding to testing—would be carried out by artificial intelligence.

According to the application, Macrohard will develop:

Technical Foundation of the Project

Macrohard will rely on the Colossus supercomputer, deployed by xAI in Memphis. This computing cluster, equipped with hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs, is already used to train the Grok language model. In the future, it will be expanded with millions of accelerators to support Macrohard’s ambitious tasks. Musk also noted that the Grok 4 chatbot will serve as the system’s core, spawning hundreds of specialized AI agents for programming, media generation, and product testing.

“The name may be a joke, but the project is entirely real!” Musk emphasized, calling on professionals to join xAI in bringing this idea to life.

Context and Competition

Macrohard positions itself as an alternative to Microsoft, whose products such as Windows and Office dominate the market. Musk has long criticized Microsoft and its co-founder Bill Gates, as well as OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft. The launch of Macrohard is not only a technological move but also a strategic step aimed at rethinking software development.

xAI, created with the mission to “understand the true nature of the universe,” brings together experts from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and Twitter. This gives the company a strong foundation for rapidly advancing in the development of cutting-edge AI solutions.

Why It Matters

Macrohard could become the world’s first company where the entire process of software development—from coding to testing—is carried out exclusively by AI. If successful, the project could transform how software is built, rendering traditional methods obsolete. Furthermore, the use of Grok and the Colossus supercomputer highlights xAI’s ambitions to create universal AI systems capable of competing with global leaders.

However, the project faces challenges: scaling computing power and ensuring the stability of AI agents require enormous resources and time. Musk has already accused Microsoft and OpenAI of trying to stifle competition, which adds another layer of context to Macrohard’s launch.

In Brief…

Through xAI, Elon Musk is launching Macrohard—a project designed to replace traditional software development with an AI-driven alternative that rivals Microsoft. A trademark application was filed on August 1, 2025, and the project will be built on the Colossus supercomputer and the Grok 4 chatbot. Macrohard will create software, cloud services, and possibly video games using autonomous AI agents. This ambitious step could reshape the software industry, but its success depends on technical execution and overcoming competitive barriers.
