WhatsApp for Android gets a handy new feature

WhatsApp is rolling out a long-awaited feature for Android users: the ability to select the quality of automatically downloaded photos and videos. As reported by GSMArena, this option—previously in testing for several months—is now available to participants in the beta program. Here’s how it works, where to find it, and how it can improve your messaging experience.

What’s New in WhatsApp?

In WhatsApp beta for Android (build 2.25.18.11), a new setting lets users choose the quality of media during auto-download. Some beta testers already have access, and it will roll out to all beta users over the next few weeks. A public release in the stable version is expected later.

Key Features

This feature is especially useful for sharing content where detail matters—like vacation photos, event videos, or anything creative.

How It Works

  1. Sending media:
    • Choose a photo/video in chat.
    • If HD is enabled (manually or by default), the phone generates two versions.
    • Both versions are uploaded with end-to-end encryption.
  2. Receiving media:
    • WhatsApp checks the recipient’s media quality settings.
    • If “Standard” is selected, they receive the compressed version.
    • If “HD” is selected, they get the high-resolution file (uses more data).
  3. Benefits:
    • Flexibility: Choose quality based on connection or needs.
    • Detail retention: Ideal for important or text-rich images.
    • Works everywhere: Personal chats, group chats, and Status updates.

Why It Matters

Note: HD files consume more data. Best to use on Wi-Fi or unlimited data plans.

How to Get Access

  1. Join the Beta Program:
    • Open Google Play Store → Search WhatsApp.
    • Scroll to “Become a beta tester” → Tap Join.
    • Update the app to version 2.25.18.11 or newer.
  2. Check Settings:
    • Go to WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and Data.
    • Look for the “Media upload quality” option.
  3. If You Don’t See It Yet:
    • Wait for future beta updates (rollout is gradual).
    • Follow WhatsApp news on Google Play or social media for announcements.
