AMD and Sony have announced the launch of an ambitious multi-year project codenamed Amethyst, aimed at advancing gaming graphics technologies through artificial intelligence.

The project’s goal is to develop a machine learning architecture, including the application of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and to create high-quality algorithms for graphics processing. These technologies will be implemented not only on the PlayStation platform but also on other consoles, PCs, and cloud services.

Key objectives of Amethyst include:

Convolutional neural networks, the backbone of the project, are widely used for processing grid-structured data, including image and video recognition. In the context of video games, they enable:

Mark Cerny, the architect of the PlayStation 5, noted that the project is long-term, with initial results expected closer to the launch of the next-generation PlayStation console. According to The Verge, developing a new console typically takes about four years, hinting at a potential connection between Amethyst’s outcomes and the release of the PlayStation 6.
