New method of fraud is spreading on Telegram

Fraudsters are sending people fake links under the guise of giving a gift in the form of a Telegram Premium subscription in order to lure them into clicking on the links they send and going to phishing resources that at first glance resemble the messenger’s authentication page. This was reported to the Russian RBK by Olga Svistunova, a senior content analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

“People may be asked to authenticate […] However, if a person enters their data from their messenger account on a fake page: phone number, password and confirmation code, they will be at the disposal of attackers,” the expert noted.

The analyst added that the link to the fake page may be similar to the real one and it is necessary to compare it with the original link in the message. If the data does not match, “it is worth thinking about it,” the expert advises.

Earlier, Kaspersky warned about a Trojan virus related to finance and trading in Telegram channels. Hackers attach archives containing malicious files (with the extensions .lnk, .com and .cmd) to Telegram posts. If the user opens these files, a malicious program, the DarkMe virus, is downloaded to the device, which allows remote execution of commands from the attackers’ server and theft of data.

NEWS.am Tech previously reported that fraudsters in Russia have begun ordering flowers and other gifts for potential victims in order to later steal money from them. The scheme works as follows: fraudsters order a bouquet of flowers for a potential victim. The delivery person arrives, introduces himself as an employee of a flower delivery service, delivers the bouquet and leaves without demanding anything in return. The potential victim, however, does not know who sent the flowers.

However, about a day later, he receives a call from the same delivery service and is informed that the delivery was not registered by mistake and that it must be registered for the report, and they ask him to dictate the numbers from the SMS message he received on his phone. After that, the scammers politely say goodbye, and then try to steal money from the card or issue a loan in his name.
