Google Play names best apps and games of 2024

Google announced the winners of the Google Play's Best of 2024 awards in the U.S., recognizing the most outstanding apps, games, and books of the year across various categories.

"This year’s awards not only showcase amazing apps, games, and books but also celebrate the talented developers who make the Android ecosystem vibrant, creating fantastic apps and games for all your devices," the Google blog states.

The company highlighted that Google Play in 2024 has become more than just an app store. To support developers, Google has "improved accessibility, expanded gaming opportunities, increased rewards for creators, and ensured timely content delivery." Google expressed hope that developers and publishers would continue to help users discover new apps, games, and books—wherever they are, on any device.

The best app of 2024 was awarded to the event planning platform Partiful. It was praised for its intuitive design and innovative approach to creating invitations. The app’s built-in tool, Party Genie, helps users quickly design invitations and provides attendees with an easy way to RSVP via a simple link.

The fantasy RPG AFK Journey was named the best game of 2024 on Google Play, thanks to its extensive roster of characters and engaging tactical combat system. The award highlighted its "vast, explorable world and stunning art style, which set it apart from its peers."

The best multi-platform app award went to Max, recognized for its extensive library of TV shows, movies, and original content, as well as its seamless cross-device viewing experience. The app ensures maximum convenience for users, regardless of their location or device.

Clash of Clans won the best multi-platform game category. Despite being over a decade old, its popularity surged this year thanks to its launch on PCs and Chromebooks. "Now, this mobile classic is optimized for wherever and however you choose to play—whether on a phone, foldable tablet, Chromebook, or PC," the Google blog noted.
