Semiconductor giant TSMC plans to hire 6,000 young engineers

Not all technology companies are cutting staff these days. Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC plans to hire more than 6,000 young engineers this year.

The company is primarily interested in young engineers who have a junior specialist, bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree in electrical or software engineering. In addition, the company plans to search for these professionals in all cities in Taiwan. At the same time, the wages of these new employees will not be low; a professional with a master's degree can expect a starting salary of $65,578 per year.

This wave of hiring will take place amid the current decline in the global semiconductor market Reuters reported. In 2021, the company increased its staff by 14.64% to 65,152 people, and a year ago—by 10.79%. It is not yet known how many employees were hired by the company in 2022, as the company's annual report is not yet ready. However, if another 6,000 people are hired this year, the company's staff will increase by almost 10%.

At the same time, it cannot be said that the IT crisis has not affected TSMC at all. This year, the company will reduce capital expenditures from $36.3 billion to $32 billion, and revenues in the current quarter, according to forecasts, will decrease by 5%.

Many large companies operating in the IT sector are now conducting large-scale layoffs. Yahoo, for example, plans to cut more than 20% of its workforce; that is, about 1,600 people.

Boeing, Meta, eBay, Zoom, PayPal, NetApp, and many other companies are also planning job cuts.
