ChattGPT creator invests in number of companies over years, from Alexis Ohanian's Reddit to Elon Musk's Neuralink

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, creator of the artificial intelligence ChatGPT, has invested in many technology and energy companies during his career.

According to Business Insider, he has been a leading investor in companies such as Reddit, co-founded by Alexis Ohanian, as well as Helion Energy, Asana. Sam Altman has also invested in OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk's Neuralink, which makes chips to implant in the human brain.

Reddit

According to PitchBook, Sam Altman led a Reddit Series B round investment in which the company raised $50 million. He also invested in Reddit's Series C round in July 2017.

Reddit is a discussion and news-sharing site where users can vote. Reddit was founded by Alexis Ohanian, Aaron Schwartz and Steve Huffman. Altman served on the Reddit board for seven years and left in January 2022.

Neuralink

Altman was also a Series C investor in Neuralink in July 2021. Neuralink is Elon Musk's company, which develops chips to be implanted in the human brain to minimize the effects of stroke. Musk said that with this technology, these people will be able to communicate and express themselves through a computer.

Elon Musk founded the company in 2016, but it was kept secret and only became known in 2017, after The Wall Street Journal published a news item it. The company demonstrated its technology on pigs and monkeys.

Lattice

According to PitchBook, in May 2016, Sam Altman was a seed investor at Lattice.

Lattice was co-founded and is run by Altman's brother, Jack Altman. It is an employee management platform for groups of people from different companies to improve employee productivity, engagement and goal setting.

Patreon

According to PitchBook, Sam Altman was listed as a Patreon Series A investor in June 2014.

Patreon is a platform that allows content creators to make money from their fans' subscriptions. By signing up, an author's fans get access to exclusive content. Patreon was founded by Sam Yam and Jack Conte. The latter is the current CEO of the platform.

Sam Altman has invested in several other companies such as grocery delivery and pickup service Instacart, energy company Helion Energy, HR management platform Asana, petition platform Change.org, cloud service provider Rescale, online programming language learning platform Codeacademy, artificial intelligence powered by search engine Rewind and several other companies, a full list of which can be seen here.
