New game from PUBG creator may use blockchain technology

A new game that PUBG creator Brendan Greenе is working on may use blockchain technology, but the game will not be based entirely on it.

Last year, Greenе left PUBG to create a new studio, PlayerUnknown Productions. The studio's first project is very, very ambitious: it is an open-world game called Artemis, which is said to be the size of a planet. We were promised a huge game world, realistic and densely populated. A kind of sandbox, where hundreds of thousands of players can do whatever they want.

An open world where players are free to roam and do whatever they can think of... After all, this is the Metaworld -- at least in the current sense of the word. This brings to mind blockchain and NFT, though not very popular with gamers.

In a recent interview with Nathan Brown's Hit Points blog, Greenе acknowledged the "metaverse" connection and the potentially negative connotations that could be associated with it, but also added that possible negative reactions don't bother him.

“We are creating a digital space. It must have an economy and work systems. And I believe that you have to be able to capitalize on the digital space – it has to be like the Internet, where you can do things that make money,” Greene said.

He didn't mention NFT when he talked about his ambitions, but many people thought he was making a blockchain-based game where NFT would be used for items. However, Greenе wrote on Twitter that this is not entirely true and that he and his team view blockchain or some "future evolution" of that technology as a useful tool in the digital space, not as its foundation.

Game developers have tried many times to enter the meta-universe, but this project seems to be one of the most ambitious. In principle, at least at first glance, nothing stands in the way of its realization. But only time will tell if the developers will succeed.
