Sony has changed PlayStation's strategy: AI now takes priority over PC ports

June 22, 2026  19:15

Sony has significantly adjusted the strategic priorities of its PlayStation Studios gaming division. In the company's new annual report, the mention of releasing games on personal computers, which appeared in the previous year's document, has disappeared, and a separate emphasis on the development of artificial intelligence has emerged.

What has changed in the wording

Previously, Sony directly stated a multiplatform approach that included PC, but this wording is entirely absent from the 2026 report. The company has also dropped the emphasis on "sustainable and profitable growth," leaving only a general mention of sustainable business development.

At the same time, the basic principles remain unchanged: single-player story-driven games continue to be considered the foundation of PlayStation Studios. Sony intends to maintain stable revenues through regular annual releases of such projects. Live service games also retain their place in the long-term strategy.

The main focus — artificial intelligence

A separate and quite detailed section in the report is devoted to AI. Sony views artificial intelligence technologies as a tool that will allow studios to significantly increase development efficiency, reduce routine processes, and devote more time to creating rich worlds and refined gameplay.

AI is also planned to be actively used in the PlayStation Store — for personalized recommendations, transaction processing, and improving user experience. In addition, the technologies will be applied to enhancing graphics quality and developing individual gameplay mechanics.

External challenges

In the report, Sony noted that PlayStation's business continues to be affected by rising prices and memory semiconductor shortages. The company intends to offset pressure on profitability by adjusting production volumes and marketing activities.

In brief

Sony has changed the wording of its PlayStation Studios strategy in its annual report: the mention of PC as a platform has disappeared, while a separate and detailed section on the use of artificial intelligence has appeared. The company is betting on AI to improve development efficiency, enhance store recommendations, and improve game quality. Single-player projects remain the foundation, while live service games are an important part of the long-term strategy. The changes reflect the company's new priorities amid growing competition and technological challenges.
