In China, snake-like robots have begun inspecting power transmission lines

In the city of Kunming (Yunnan Province), the local power grid company has launched an unusual pilot project: robots resembling snakes in form and movement are now being used to monitor high-voltage power lines. This solution is particularly relevant during the period of the national college entrance examinations (Gaokao), when even brief power outages can seriously affect the conduct of the tests.

How the snake robot works

The robot is equipped with a high-precision camera and a set of sensors that allow real-time detection of:

  • damage to wires and insulators
  • signs of equipment wear
  • overheating hotspots

The flexible segmented body allows the device to easily navigate complex sections of the line, including insulators and other elements that are difficult to inspect using traditional methods — drones or manual inspection.

One of the main advantages is the contactless power supply system located in the tail section. The robot receives energy directly from the power line, allowing it to operate virtually around the clock without needing regular recharging.

Why this is needed

The use of snake robots significantly reduces risks to personnel, who previously had to conduct inspections at great heights in challenging weather conditions. Furthermore, the new technology increases the frequency and quality of inspections, which should reduce the number of accidents and lower overall power grid maintenance costs.

Project prospects

Kunming's power grid company views the project as part of a broader strategy to create intelligent energy systems and actively integrate robotics. After successful trials, similar devices are planned for use in other regions of China.
