HMD unveils feature phones with built-in AI: Voice assistant, digital wallet, and video calls

At MWC 2026, HMD — the company that previously managed Nokia’s feature phone division — announced plans to transform basic keypad phones into more capable smart devices. During 2026, some models are expected to gain features that were previously limited to smartphones, including an AI voice assistant, a digital wallet, and video calling. A digital wallet built directly into a feature phone

One of the most surprising additions is an integrated digital wallet that will allow users to receive, store, and withdraw money through local payment systems.

The project is being developed in partnership with fintech company Kivi3 and blockchain platform Polygon Labs. The companies explain that security will be handled at the device level, using mechanisms such as PIN protection and other safeguards that do not require constant internet connectivity.

This functionality is particularly relevant in markets where access to smartphones remains limited. India was highlighted as a key example, as feature phones remain widely used there. The rollout is expected to begin in India before expanding to other countries.

An AI-powered voice assistant

HMD is also working with the Indian company Sarvam AI to introduce a voice assistant to keypad phones.

The assistant is designed to perform simple tasks such as making calls, setting alarms, turning on the flashlight, and answering basic questions. The developers emphasize that this will not be a full-scale conversational AI similar to systems like ChatGPT. Instead, it will be a lightweight AI system optimized to work on modest hardware and under conditions of unstable internet connectivity.

A separate initiative involves the creation of an AI companion aimed at older users. This project is being developed together with the company InTouch. According to the developers, the system is intended to function as a digital companion that can remind users to take medication, check on their wellbeing, and notify relatives if problems arise. A pilot launch is planned in Europe before expanding to other markets.

Video calls and the Xpress Chat app

New models will also include an application called Xpress Chat, designed to expand communication capabilities. The app is expected to support:

• voice messages
• group chats
• photo sharing

These additions mean that a keypad phone could handle the most basic modern communication tasks, particularly for people who prefer not to use a touchscreen device.
