A smartphone can run for weeks — sometimes even months — without being restarted, and everything may seem fine. However, IT experts increasingly recommend not neglecting this simple procedure. In an interview with RT, Runet editor-in-chief Vladimir Zykov explained why restarting your phone is not just a ritual, but a genuinely useful habit.
Over time, small system issues accumulate: frozen background processes, memory leaks, driver errors, and cached data that does not get cleared properly. Gradually, all of this consumes resources. The phone may start slowing down, draining battery faster, overheating, or losing network connection.
“If a device starts running slower, discharging faster, overheating, or losing signal, a restart can solve the problem without the need for a factory reset or a service center visit,” Vladimir Zykov noted.
After restarting, the smartphone re-registers with the mobile network, reconnects to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth — which can immediately improve connection quality. In addition, system patches and updates that may have been stuck in the background are properly applied during reboot.
If your phone is working normally, once a week is enough. A full power-off (not just locking the screen) provides the same effect.
If the device has already started lagging, draining quickly, or overheating, you can restart it more often — every 2–3 days or as soon as you notice symptoms. In most cases, this helps without drastic measures like a factory reset.
Restarting is also beneficial from a security perspective. It helps properly terminate suspicious processes and ensures the latest security patches are activated.
It may also help reduce unnecessary battery heating — especially if you charge your phone overnight in a thick case or under a pillow, as previously warned by Ippon expert Georgy Tsereteli.
If the issue is hardware-related — battery wear, overheating due to internal dust buildup, or a faulty network module — a restart will only provide temporary relief. In such cases, professional repair is necessary.
However, in 80–90 percent of cases involving sluggish performance, a simple restart restores speed and stability.
Restarting your smartphone once a week (or more often if it slows down) clears RAM, stops frozen processes, fixes minor glitches, and can improve network connectivity. It is a simple way to restore speed and stability without resetting the device. If your phone starts overheating, draining quickly, or losing signal, restart it as soon as possible. Regular rebooting is one of the most effective and completely free preventive measures for any Android or iOS device.
