Today, amid the rapid pace of technological development, buyers of smartphones, laptops, and PCs have grown accustomed to expecting noticeable improvements in performance, energy efficiency, and new features with each new generation. However, recent years suggest otherwise: leading chip manufacturers — Qualcomm, MediaTek, Intel, and AMD — are increasingly releasing platforms under new names that are essentially rebranded versions of older designs. This is not a flaw but a deliberate strategy aimed at extending the lifecycle of proven solutions and simplifying marketing.
The Smartphone Market: MediaTek Leads the Rebranding Trend
Qualcomm and MediaTek dominate the mobile chipset market, but MediaTek in particular frequently resorts to renaming existing chips. A prime example is the legendary Helio G99, released in 2022 and becoming a major success in the budget segment thanks to its strong combination of TSMC’s 6 nm process, Cortex-A76/A55 cores, and Mali-G57 MP2 graphics.
A couple of years later came the “successors”: Helio G99 Ultra, Helio G99 Ultimate, and even Helio G100. Yet a closer look at the specifications reveals almost no differences — the same cores, clock speeds, and GPU. In some cases, there are mentions of a slightly improved image signal processor (for example, support for 200 MP cameras instead of 108 MP) or minor tweaks to energy efficiency, but overall it is the same chip under different labels.
A similar pattern appears in the Dimensity lineup. The Dimensity 6080 is nearly identical to the two-year-old Dimensity 810. The same applies to the Dimensity 7020 (a copy of the Dimensity 930), Dimensity 7050 (Dimensity 1080), and Dimensity 8020 (Dimensity 1100). Even the once-flagship Dimensity 1200 has seen two “reincarnations” — first as the Dimensity 1300 and later as the Dimensity 8050.
Qualcomm is not far behind. The Snapdragon 778G evolved into the Snapdragon 778G Plus and Snapdragon 782G, featuring higher CPU and GPU frequencies but no fundamental architectural changes.
These moves allow manufacturers to fill product lineups faster, reduce development costs, and offer “new” devices across multiple price categories.
PCs and Laptops: Intel and AMD Join In
The desktop and laptop markets show a similar trend. Last year, Intel introduced the Core i5-110, which turned out to be a direct copy of the five-year-old Core i5-10400 — the same 6 cores and 12 threads, the same Comet Lake 14 nm process, identical clock speeds and cache. Simply a new name for old inventory.
AMD has followed a comparable path. The Ryzen 7 170 is essentially a renamed Ryzen 7 6800U (or very close to the Ryzen 7 7735HS) based on the Zen 3+ architecture with only minor clock increases. The Ryzen 200 series is a rebranding of the Ryzen 8000U lineup, while the budget Ryzen 3 30 and Ryzen 5 40 are copies of the Mendocino platform.
Marketing tricks have also extended to process nodes. A few years ago, Intel renamed its 10 nm Enhanced SuperFin node to “Intel 7” to appear comparable to competitors’ 7 nm technologies. The process itself did not change — just a more appealing number for slides and spec sheets.
What Should Everyday Users Do?
In this environment, blindly trusting marketing announcements and model numbers is no longer enough. To avoid disappointment, it helps to follow a few simple rules:
Ultimately, many “new” processors remain perfectly capable for everyday tasks, gaming at medium settings, and productivity work. But expecting a revolutionary performance boost is often unrealistic — these are frequently well-refined older solutions in new packaging.
