What is known about the iPhone Air 2? Specifications, release date, and price

January 26, 2026  13:11

Apple continues to experiment with ultra-thin smartphones. After the mixed reception of the first iPhone Air in 2025, the company is preparing a second generation in which it plans to address almost all of the main criticisms from users. There is still no official announcement, but insiders and supply chain sources have already revealed enough details to form a fairly clear picture.

Release date: fall 2026 or spring 2027

Most analysts agree that the iPhone Air 2 will be released in the fall of 2026, alongside the main iPhone 18 lineup. However, there is also a chance it could be postponed until spring 2027. The possible delay is linked to a major redesign, including the addition of a second rear camera, which was one of the main shortcomings of the first generation.

Design and display: even thinner and brighter

The main advantage of the Air series, its record-breaking thinness and low weight, will remain. According to rumors, the iPhone Air 2 will have a body thickness of just 5.5 to 5.7 mm. Materials will stay premium, with a titanium alloy frame and the updated Ceramic Shield 2 protective glass.

The display will grow to 6.55 inches, an OLED panel with ProMotion support at 120 Hz. Peak brightness is expected to reach 3000 nits, one of the best figures on the market. Apple is testing CoE technology, Color Filter on Encapsulation, which makes the display thinner and more energy efficient while also improving color reproduction.

A new generation Dynamic Island will remain, but it will become even more compact.

Processor, memory, and battery life: a major step forward

The iPhone Air 2 will be powered by the A20 chip manufactured on TSMC’s 2 nm process. A performance increase of 15 to 20 percent and an improvement in energy efficiency of around 30 percent compared to the A19 are expected. The device will come with 12 GB of RAM and storage options from 256 GB up to 1 TB.

The modem will be Apple’s own C2, with support for mmWave 5G in the United States and improved power efficiency.

The most difficult challenge is improving battery life in such an ultra-thin body. Apple is addressing this in two ways: increasing battery energy density and optimizing power consumption through the new chip. Battery life is expected to improve by 15 to 25 percent compared to the first generation.

Cameras: the main upgrade of the second generation

The first iPhone Air was criticized for having only a single rear camera. In the second generation, Apple is set to fix this. A dual-camera setup is expected, with a 48 MP main camera and a 48 MP ultra-wide camera. Night photography and image processing in difficult lighting conditions will also be improved.

Price: remaining at the level of the first generation

The expected starting price is 999 dollars, the same as the original iPhone Air. This keeps the device competitive in the premium segment, especially considering all the upgrades.

In brief

The iPhone Air 2 is expected to launch in fall 2026, with a possible delay until spring 2027. It will feature a thickness of 5.5 to 5.7 mm, a 6.55 inch OLED display at 120 Hz, the A20 chip on a 2 nm process, 12 GB of RAM, and a dual 48 MP camera system. Battery life will improve by 15 to 25 percent, while the starting price will remain at 999 dollars. It will be a significantly refined version of the first generation, with Apple fixing its main weaknesses: the limited camera setup and the short battery life.
