How to find a break in a string of lights: A detailed guide to locating a burned out bulb or faulty wire

Your holiday lights suddenly went out, or only one section stopped working. In ninety percent of cases they can be repaired in ten to thirty minutes without buying a new set. The key is understanding how modern LED strings are built and why an entire branch can go dark when a single element fails. Below is a verified step by step diagnostic procedure, from simple to advanced, that works for both cheap imported strings and outdoor decorations up to fifty meters long.

How an LED string works and why it goes dark

Modern strings use parallel series wiring: the LEDs are grouped in sets of ten to thirty. If one LED in a group burns out, the entire group turns off while the rest continue to operate. This explains the common situation where half the string lights up and the other half does not.

Main components:
• Controller that sets blinking modes
• Power supply or diode bridge
• Resistors and current drivers
• The LEDs themselves, often with built in shunts in higher end models

Typical failures:
• Does not turn on at all — problem in the power supply or controller
• One branch or color is out — a break or a burned out LED in that section
• Flickering or dim light — poor contact or capacitor degradation

Step by step diagnostics from simple to advanced

• The controller housing for cracks

Most breaks occur near the plug or at the controller output. If you find damage, strip, solder and insulate it with heat shrink tubing; for outdoor strings ensure proper sealing.

Turn the string on and gently run your fingers along the cord, bending it slightly. At the break point the faulty section will flicker or turn on. This method is ideal for icicle lights and outdoor strands. For safety use rubber gloves.

Step 3. Continuity test with a multimeter
Switch the tester to continuity or diode check mode:
• Check each wire for continuity
• Test the LEDs; a working one will glow faintly or show a forward voltage of two to three volts
A burned out LED can simply be shorted (the leads connected together). The string will continue working. It is safe to remove up to four or five LEDs in one group.

Step 4. The halving method (for long outdoor strings)
To quickly find a break in a fifty meter outdoor string:
• Disconnect the power
• Mentally divide the strand in half
• Check continuity — identify which half is not responding
• Divide the faulty half again and repeat
In most cases the fault is located within four to six measurements.

Step 5. Checking the controller and power supply
If everything looks intact but the string will not turn on or several branches fail at once, the controller is likely at fault. Typical failures:
• Swollen electrolytic capacitor
• Cracked resistor
• Burned circuit trace
Capacitors and resistors can be replaced for a low cost, and repairing the controller is usually worth it.
