Samsung unveils smartphone that folds both inward and outward

January 20, 2023  19:32

At the CES 2023 exhibition in Las Vegas, Samsung Display has shown a prototype smartphone with a flexible screen and a new folding mechanism Flex In & Out, which allows you to fold the screen in two directions: inward and outward.

The most important part of the prototype is a special folding mechanism called "water drop", thanks to which the folds on the screen are not so noticeable.

This is not the first time Samsung Display demonstrates such a prototype, the company showed such a folding screen in 2021, at the exhibition iMiD, held in September, but then the approach was different - the screen was divided into three parts, each of which tilted to its side.

In the case of commercial versions of such phones, the solutions are not so radical, for example, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 models use hinges that only bend the screens inward.

Despite the fact that the Korean manufacturer is the undisputed leader in this segment, two models on the market, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4, are criticized – the screens of both have noticeable creases, and competing companies prefer to hide them, such as the Oppo Find N2 and Motorola Razr.

Perhaps in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5, which will be released in August this year, the company will make changes on this issue, but for now the Korean manufacturer is actively preparing for the release of the Galaxy S23 main series - flagship smartphone, which is scheduled for release on February 1.
