A wet wipe removes paint from the iPhone 17 Pro? A new “disease” of Apple’s flagships

November 17, 2025  14:45

While some users admire the orange and blue colors of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, others have already encountered an unpleasant surprise: the anodized coating on these color variants can be wiped off with an ordinary wet wipe. Videos posted by owners on TikTok and Reddit show that after just one or two wipes, the corners of the camera module and the side edges begin to reveal silver aluminum underneath — the paint comes off in layers.

What Is Actually Happening

For the first time, the iPhone 17 Pro features a matte anodized aluminum frame in bright colors (Orange and Teal Blue). Unlike previous years’ titanium models, the aluminum undergoes deeper coloration, but the paint layer is still thin and sensitive to alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and even some moisturizing ingredients found in “regular” wet wipes.

The most vulnerable areas include:

  • The corners of the camera module, where the coating is thinner due to milling
  • The side edges near the buttons
  • The area around the USB-C port

Users report that 3–5 energetic wipes with a cloth containing isopropyl alcohol — which is present in nearly all antibacterial wipes — are enough for the color to start disappearing, exposing bare metal.

Apple’s Official Position

Apple has already updated the care recommendations for the iPhone 17 Pro on its support page. The company advises users to:

  • Use only a soft microfiber cloth slightly dampened with water
  • Avoid any products containing alcohol, peroxide, acetone, or chlorine
  • Refrain from using wet wipes, paper towels, or abrasive materials

Apple acknowledges that the bright anodized finishes are more delicate than the darker and titanium models from previous years.

Real Cases

  • The owner of an orange iPhone 17 Pro Max demonstrated that the paint vanished from the camera corners within ten seconds of wiping with a pharmacy wet wipe.
  • A MacRumors forum thread now has more than 300 posts with photos of “peeled” edges.
  • Service centers are currently refusing to replace affected devices under warranty, classifying the issue as a “cosmetic defect caused by improper care.”

How to Protect the Color

  1. Apply a transparent skin or case immediately after purchase — many users are already doing so.
  2. Clean the phone only with a dry microfiber cloth or one slightly dampened with distilled water.
  3. Avoid all antibacterial and alcohol-based wipes.

Summary

The bright orange and blue iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models are losing their anodized coating when cleaned with ordinary wet wipes, with the camera corners suffering the most. Apple now explicitly prohibits alcohol-based cleaning products. Anyone who cares about keeping the device in perfect condition should use a case or skin right away. The new flagship is more beautiful, but more delicate than its predecessors.
