ChatGPT fools HR professionals: AI writes motivation letter and test assignment better than 80% of applicants

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbot created by OpenAI, was able to fool HR specialists at Schwa, a communications and consulting services company. The program applied for a job and wrote a test assignment better than 80% of applicants. As a result, the company's HR people wanted to meet with him in person and invited him for an interview.

In fact, Schwa founder Neil Taylor wanted to test his HR team and AI-based recruiting software with ChatGPT to see if they would understand that there was an AI behind the app, not a real person. And would AI be able to write a motivation letter and an essay so that HR people would perceive him as a person and invite him for an interview?

According to Business Insider, the test for job seekers, including ChatGPT, was given the task of describing the secrets of good writing in 300 words.

ChatGPT wrote in their assignment that the secret to good writing is simple and consists of telling a good story. AI also wrote his essay in the style of American writer and copywriter Dave Trott, following instructions given to him by Neil Taylor.

Only one in five applicants went through the selection process and were selected for a personal interview with Taylor, and ChatGPT was one of them because, according to Taylor, he was even more competent than many applicants hoping to get a job at his company.

Beatrice Nolan of Insider decided to replicate Taylor's experiment with ChatGPT. She wrote two motivation letters for the position of social media for employment assistant and clerk. He then asked two HR professionals to evaluate them. Both noted that the letters lacked "personality," but both acknowledged that they would likley invite the authors of these letters for an interview.
