According to a report published today by Bloomberg, Meta Platforms has signed a multi-year contract with the German artificial intelligence startup Black Forest Labs worth more than $100 million to use its image generation technologies, Bloomberg reports.

This deal demonstrates another investment by Meta aimed at strengthening its artificial intelligence capabilities amid growing competition in the generative AI sector.

The partnership structure includes Meta's commitment to pay Black Forest Labs $35 million in the first year and $105 million in the second year, according to a person familiar with the details of the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity. Thus, the total value of the contract over two years amounts to $140 million.

Black Forest Labs' Rise in AI Image Generation

The company Black Forest Labs, founded by former Stability AI researchers Andreas Blattmann, Patrick Esser, and Robin Rombach, has quickly become a notable player in AI image generation. The German startup introduced its Flux AI image generation models in August 2024 and raised $31 million in initial funding from investors, including Andreessen Horowitz.

The company's Flux models have gained recognition for their high-quality results and have already been integrated into several major platforms. Notably, xAI initially used Black Forest Labs' Flux AI model for image generation in its chatbot Grok before switching to its own Aurora model in December 2024. Flux technology is also used by Mistral AI's chatbot Le Chat.

Meta's Broader Investment Strategy in Artificial Intelligence

The partnership with Black Forest Labs is part of Meta's aggressive expansion of its artificial intelligence capabilities under the leadership of Chief AI Director Alexandr Wang. The company is actively investing in AI talent and infrastructure, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing plans to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on data centers to develop "superintelligence."

In recent months, Meta has concluded several high-profile partnerships and acquisitions in the artificial intelligence sector. The company invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and invited CEO Wang to head the newly created Meta Superintelligence Labs. Reports indicate that the company also offered compensation packages worth hundreds of millions of dollars to attract leading AI researchers from competitors such as OpenAI and Apple.

In early August, Meta announced another significant AI partnership with the image generation company Midjourney, though the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The partnership with Midjourney is aimed at licensing the startup's "aesthetic technologies" for Meta's future models and products.
