Apple preparing AI-powered desktop robot: When is the release expected?

August 14, 2025  14:53

Apple is planning to revolutionize the smart device market with the introduction of an AI-powered desktop robot in 2027, Bloomberg reports, citing insider sources. In addition to the robot, Apple is developing a smart speaker with a display and new smart home security solutions. Here’s what is known about the company’s plans and how they could transform the smart device ecosystem.

Desktop Robot: The Virtual Companion of the Future
According to Bloomberg, the central element of Apple’s AI strategy will be a desktop robot designed to serve as a virtual companion. Codenamed J595, the device resembles an iPad mounted on a movable arm capable of tilting and shifting up to 6 inches in any direction. This allows the robot to track the user, respond to voice commands, and engage in conversations.

  • Interactive Siri: The robot will feature an updated version of Siri with a “visual personality,” possibly in the form of an animated Finder logo or Memoji. The new Siri will be able to hold conversations, suggest restaurants and recipes, and assist with travel planning.
  • Functionality: The device will support FaceTime video calls with motion tracking, similar to Center Stage. Users will be able to control the display via an iPhone touchscreen or joystick.
  • Development Status: The project is currently in the prototyping stage, and the final design — including Siri’s appearance — has not yet been approved.

The robot is scheduled for release in 2027, though Bloomberg notes that the timeline could shift, given Apple’s history of delays with major projects, such as the Apple Car.

Smart Speaker and Smart Home Security
Apple is also working on a smart speaker with a display (codenamed J490) expected to debut in 2026. This device will target the affordable smart home market, offering features such as home automation control, music playback, web browsing, video conferencing, and note-taking. However, unlike the desktop robot, it will lack a movable arm and advanced Siri functionality.

Additionally, Apple is investing in AI-powered home security systems. The company is developing smart cameras capable of automating home functions like lighting and climate control. Security is seen as a top growth priority, reinforced by recent statements from CEO Tim Cook about Apple’s “amazing” product pipeline.

Apple’s Strategy and Industry Context
Apple is rapidly expanding its AI capabilities under the Apple Intelligence brand, aiming to catch up with competitors in artificial intelligence. The desktop robot will be a key component of this strategy, offering an unprecedented level of user interaction. Beyond the robot and smart speaker, Apple is also exploring a mobile robot with wheels and a manipulator for use in retail stores or manufacturing, as well as concepts for humanoid robots, inspired by innovations from companies like Tesla.

These developments echo other industry projects — for example, rumors suggest that former Apple designer Jony Ive is working with OpenAI on a similar AI device, signaling a possible new trend in personal companion robots.

Bottom Line
Apple is planning an ambitious expansion of its ecosystem with AI-powered devices. The desktop robot, slated for 2027, promises to be a highly interactive virtual companion. A 2026 smart speaker with a display and AI-driven home security cameras will further strengthen Apple’s smart home lineup. While these projects highlight the company’s commitment to AI innovation, their success will depend on Apple’s ability to overcome technical and manufacturing challenges.
