PS5 Pro production cost angers analysts: Minimal cost increase, major price hike

May 30, 2025  12:31

TechInsights, a well-known analytical firm, has revealed the production cost of the PlayStation 5 Pro, which launched in November 2024. According to their teardown analysis, Sony’s flagship console costs only 2% more to manufacture than the base PS5 — despite notable hardware upgrades. This cost does not include logistics, marketing, or R&D expenses.

Retail Price Raises Eyebrows

In the United States, the PS5 Pro retails for $699, a 40% increase over the digital-only PS5 ($399) and 28% higher than the disc version ($499). Given the minimal increase in manufacturing cost, this retail price allows Sony to significantly boost profit margins — a move that has sparked criticism among journalists and consumers.

Some tech outlets, including The Verge, argue that the performance and graphical differences between the PS5 and the PS5 Pro are only noticeable on large screens and from close viewing distances, making the $699 price hard to justify for the average gamer.

Component Cost Breakdown

TechInsights outlined the key hardware components of the PS5 Pro:

  • AMD RDNA 3 Processor: Priced at $109, it makes up 19% of the total production cost. For comparison, the base PS5's processor accounted for 31%, indicating cost optimizations in the new model.
  • Storage: The Pro version includes two 512 GB flash modules (1 TB SSD total), the most expensive component at $77 per module, or $154 combined — one of the main hardware upgrades.
  • RAM: The PS5 Pro comes with 18 GB of GDDR6 memory, compared to 16 GB in the base model, contributing to the higher cost.

Additional improvements include a more powerful RDNA 3 GPU and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology, which enhances ray tracing and supports stable 4K at 60 FPS.

Comparison to the Base PS5

At launch in 2020, the original PS5 was estimated to cost $450–$670 to produce, factoring in global logistics and the semiconductor shortage. Sony initially lost $100–$170 per unit, banking on game and subscription revenue to offset losses.

In contrast, analysts estimate the PS5 Pro’s production cost to be between $460–$500, similar to the base model — but with a $699 retail price, Sony now avoids losses and potentially turns a profit on each console sold.

Market and Consumer Reaction

Despite the high price tag, the PS5 Pro has seen strong demand in Russia, even at markup prices up to 130,000 rubles (~$1,400) due to parallel imports. The first shipment sold out in just over a week.

During Days of Play in May 2025, Sony offered a ¥7,000 (~$47) discount in Japan — still not enough to make the console broadly affordable.

On X (formerly Twitter), users expressed frustration, saying the price is a deterrent, especially for those already satisfied with their standard PS5.

Mixed Industry Opinions

Cameron Faulkner of Polygon suggests that the PS5 Pro’s true potential will shine with the release of new exclusive titles optimized for the system. However, Digital Foundry experts recommend considering a gaming PC at a similar price point, which may offer greater flexibility and long-term value.
