Inspired by "Terminator 2": Scientists create a liquid robot capable of splitting, merging, and deforming

South Korean researchers from Seoul National University and Gachon University have unveiled a groundbreaking innovation: the world’s first liquid robot capable of changing shape, splitting apart, merging back together, and navigating complex environments. Their work has been published in the prestigious journal Science Advances.

Design and Operating Principles

This robot is built from a liquid core encased in a layer of hydrophobic (water-repellent) particles. This unique structure marries the flexibility of a liquid with the resilience of a solid, making it durable under stress, able to recover its shape, and adept at intricate tasks.

Initially, the team explored using spherical droplets coated with particles. However, they shifted to a novel approach: coating ice cubes with these particles and then melting them. This tweak significantly enhanced the robot’s strength and stability.

Remarkable Capabilities

Thanks to its design, the robot can:

  • Squeeze through tight spaces, like gaps between metal bars.
  • Split into separate pieces and recombine.
  • Capture and transport objects.
  • Move seamlessly across both land and water.

Sound Wave Control

A standout feature is its control system, which relies on sound waves to dictate speed and direction. This method offers precise command over the robot’s movements, opening up a range of potential applications.

Cinematic Inspiration

The developers admit their creation draws partial inspiration from the iconic liquid-metal T-1000 from James Cameron’s Terminator 2. While it’s not yet at the sci-fi level of that shape-shifting menace, this liquid robot marks a leap forward in robotics, with possible uses spanning medicine to search-and-rescue missions.
