Which batteries best handle extreme temperatures?

Sodium-ion batteries have emerged as the top choice for performing reliably in both scorching heat and freezing cold, according to Mikhail Vazisov, General Manager of Ippon, in an interview with Gazeta.Ru.

Why Sodium-Ion Batteries Stand Out

Vazisov explains that sodium-ion batteries maintain stable operation at temperatures exceeding 40°C over extended periods. When overheated, these batteries feature a contact-breaking mechanism that prevents overloads and fires—a key safety advantage. Unlike their lithium-ion counterparts, sodium-based batteries are considered fireproof, making them a safer option in high-heat scenarios.

For comparison:

  • Lead-acid batteries don’t catch fire but lose efficiency in heat, leading to rapid wear.
  • Lithium-ion batteries can become unstable or even ignite when overheated.

Performance in Freezing Conditions

Sodium-ion batteries also shine in cold climates. They function and recharge effectively at temperatures as low as -20°C, a critical trait for ensuring device reliability in harsh winters.

Other battery types fare less well in the cold:

  • Lead-acid batteries discharge quickly and lose capacity.
  • Lithium-ion batteries struggle to recharge in subzero conditions, with efficiency dropping sharply.
