Apple reveals new iPhones, AirPods, Apple Watch: What might disappoint you?

Apple has revealed its new iPhones, AirPods, and Apple Watch during the highly anticipated Fall 2022 event. All three products, according to the company's CEO Tim Cook, work well together, while their interaction opens up many new functionalities.

The new iPhones are expected to be available for pre-order on September 9 (but some of them will be available only in October), and the prices for them, contrary to what many analysts predicted, the company did not raise. As for the other new products, the Apple Watch will be available for order on September 14, and AirPods Pro will go on sale on September 23.

Let's find out what the new Apple products are: which of them are definitely worth your attention, and which may disappoint you?

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

A quick look at the features of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus: 

• True-Tone OLED display, 
• 6.1- and 6.7-inch screens,
• Longer-lasting ceramic screens,
• Increased battery life,
• Improved front-facing camera performance in low light,
• Action Mode that stabilizes videos,
• 5-core graphics processor with A15 bionic chip,
• Emergency SOS security service.

There is no mini model in the iPhone 14 series, which is sure to disappoint some potential customers, as well as fans of the compact smartphones that are so hard to find today.

Instead of the iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone 14 Plus has a larger 6.7-inch screen. The iPhone 14 has a slightly smaller screen diagonal of 6.1 inches.

The new iPhone 14 looks a lot like the iPhone 13, but if you look closely, you can see a few changes. Some things were borrowed from the iPhone 13 Pro: the same five-core graphics processor with a bionic chip A15 inside, the same wide-angle camera sensor with an aperture of f/1.5. The front camera has been improved to f/1.9 aperture with autofocus, so even in low light, you can get better selfies.

Photos will be one of the main features of this year's models: they will be processed by a new algorithm called the Photonic Engine, which will preserve more details in low light - and with all the phone's cameras.

Apple also claims that the battery life of all versions of the iPhone 14 will be longer than previous models. 

The new iPhone 14 won't support physical SIM cards: they will be replaced by digital eSIMs, which Apple claims will support multiple numbers and are more secure.

The new smartphones also feature a security service called Emergency SOS, which works via satellite and can connect to emergency services even if the user is out of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. This service is free for iPhone 14 users in the U.S. and Canada. When it will be available in our region - and whether it will be available at all - is still unknown.

The iPhone 14 will be available in 5 colors: midnight, blue, starlight, purple and red.

Prices for the iPhone 14 start at $799, and the Plus version will cost $899. The first one will be available for pre-order starting September 9, while the latter won't be available until October.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

A quick look at the features of the iPhone 14 Pro and Max: 

• Super Retina XDR display,
• 6.1- and 6.7-inch screens,
• The always-on display doesn't turn off when the device isn't in use,
• A new reduced power mode that will extend battery life, 
• Apple's latest A16 Bionic chip,
• 48-megapixel camera with a larger sensor,
• Improved low-light photography,
• Improved flash.

So, the size of the new Pro version is the same as the iPhone 13 Pro models: the iPhone 14 Pro diagonal is 6.1 inches, and the iPhone 14 Max is 6.7 inches. But the cameras have been improved, which, as in the case of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, can be considered one of the main features of these smartphones. 

Thanks to the new 48 MP four-pixel wide-angle sensor, you can capture 12-megapixel images, and there's also a 2x optical zoom. You can also capture 48-megapixel images in ProRAW format. The ultra-wide sensor will provide better pictures in low light. Besides, all the cameras on these models use the Photonic Engine for photo processing.

The front camera on the iPhone 14 Pro is the same as on the iPhone 14. But there's an interesting trick here - a cutout called Dynamic Island. Notifications and animations appear in this cutout, which looks quite original.

The new iPhone 14 Pro smartphones from Apple keep the display and cameras constantly on. At the same time, the company claims that the battery life of the new devices should be even longer than that of the iPhone 13 Pro (29 hours of video playback versus 28 hours).

The new iPhone 14 Pro also has an A16 processor, which appears to be a little different from the A15, but has more flexibility at higher clock speeds.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be available in four colors: space black, silver, gold, and deep purple.

Prices for the iPhone 14 Pro start at $999, and the larger model will cost $1099 and up, as will last year's models. Both versions will be available for pre-order on September 9.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch Series 8 is very similar to the Series 7, both in appearance and in most of its features. The size and design as well as the system are the same. They added, however, a few sensors with new health and safety features. And - claims that this watch can save your life.

According to the company, a more sensitive accelerometer and gyroscope can understand that you have been in a car accident, and the device will automatically call an ambulance. However, it is difficult to say whether this function will work in our country and our region. Probably not.

The new body temperature sensor monitors your temperature while you sleep and alerts you to changes in familiar patterns.

The Apple Watch Series 8 costs the same as the Series 7: $399 for the 41mm Wi-Fi/GPS, $429 for the 45mm Wi-Fi/GPS, and another $100 for cellular. Pre-orders are available now, and shipments will begin on Sept. 16.

Apple Watch SE

The Apple Watch SE got its first update. The second-generation model is still referred to simply as the ‘Apple Watch SE,’ and they don't differ much inside: the processor has been upgraded to the S8 SiP, but in fact, it's not much different from the S7 or even the S6; it's thought to be about 20 percent faster than the S5 that the original SE was equipped with). 

The bezels around the display on the new watch are slightly larger than on the Series 8, and they don't support constant power on. Also, this watch can't measure temperature or check blood oxygen levels. But it does have a gyroscope and accelerometer for detecting car crashes. 

Prices for the watch have dropped slightly to $249 (40mm GPS) and $299 (44mm GPS) (the old SE cost $279 and $329, respectively). Pre-orders are available now, and shipments of the watch will begin on September 16.

Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple New line of smartwatches is led by the premium Apple Watch Ultra. 

The huge 49-millimeter Apple Watch Ultra with a bulkier case is suitable for extreme weather conditions and outdoor activities. The watch has a new customizable action button on the left side, water resistance to 100 meters (double that of the Series 8), and is certified for recreational diving at depths of up to 40 meters.

This watch has everything you'd find in a Series 8, plus a high-precision dual GPS, an extra speaker, and a higher-capacity battery that lasts up to 36 hours. 

The case of the new watch is made of titanium and is only available in one color, but there are three exclusive straps - one for diving and water sports, one for endurance sports such as marathon running, and one for cold weather conditions. 

There is only one model in one size with cellular support, and it costs $799, with only one of three straps to choose from. 

Pre-orders are available now, and shipments of the watch will begin on September 23.

AirPods Pro

AirPods can be called one of Apple's most successful product lines, and AirPods Pro is the most popular model. But now these headphones are perhaps a little outdated and in need of an update. 

The new 2nd generation AirPods Pro features Apple's new H2 chip, which offers faster processing with less power consumption. The manufacturers promised better sound quality (but not lossless!) and twice the noise cancellation capability. 

The battery lasts 6 hours (the last model could last 4.5 hours), and the case provides up to 30 hours of playback (the last model provided 24 hours). 

The second-generation AirPods Pro will sell for $249. Pre-orders will begin on Sept. 9.
