How do scammers try to fool people and extort money on social networks?

On the social network "Odnoklassniki," the key results of 2023 in protecting users from unwanted content and internet threats were presented. OK experts identified the most common themes exploited by malicious actors when distributing spam and other undesirable content that violates the social network's rules.

The most frequently used theme was related to lottery winnings. Users were invited to participate in a lottery or receive cash prizes, after which they were asked to pay a "tax," followed by a "service fee," and so on.

In second place in popularity among internet scammers were solicitations for supposed donations to save animals and help sick or injured people, while online casinos ranked third.

Spammers also disseminated so-called Nigerian letters (money extortion under the pretext of fines or inheritance claims), engaged in SMS fraud by tricking users into revealing verification codes, and offered users to buy photos purportedly from the profiles of women, attempting to shift communication to external messengers.

In 2023, Odnoklassniki managed to provide maximum protection for users against internet threats. The amount of spam visible to users approached zero. By the end of December, the percentage of users on the social network who encountered or could potentially encounter such activity fell below 0.5% of the entire daily audience, marking the lowest value in the last five years.

In OK's context, spam also encompasses unwanted actions or materials throughout the social network. Its main objectives usually involve promoting low-quality products and services, fraud, and illegal earnings at the expense of internet users. Odnoklassniki identify and restrict such content not only through manual moderation but also automatically using machine learning algorithms.

As part of the fight against scammers in 2023, Odnoklassniki recorded and thwarted over 9 million suspicious login attempts. Up to 90% of such cases – potential breaches – are identified and automatically blocked. Additionally, last year, Odnoklassniki blocked more than 7 million suspicious users or partially restricted their access to the platform.
