Zoom video conferencing will move to virtual reality

On February 2, 2024, Zoom, the developer of the eponymous video conferencing service, will release a version of its application for the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset, according to PCMag. This makes Zoom one of the first popular third-party services adapted for Apple's new device.

The key feature of Zoom for Vision Pro will be support for the Persona option. Persona is a digital 3D avatar of the user, created by Vision Pro using built-in scanners. The avatar is designed to allow conversation partners to see the user's face, even when it is physically covered by the Vision Pro headset.

Additionally, Zoom has added the capability for collaborative interaction with 3D objects in the application for Vision Pro. This feature could be particularly useful for artists, designers, engineers, and professionals who frequently work with 3D models.

In addition to Zoom, other video conferencing services such as FaceTime, Cisco Webex, and Microsoft Teams will be available on the launch of Vision Pro.

PCMag expressed skepticism about Vision Pro becoming a popular gadget for business negotiations, citing concerns about the headset's weight and early user reviews indicating quick fatigue of the face, head, and neck.

The release of Apple Vision Pro in the United States is scheduled for February 2, 2024.
