A new look at black holes։ Тhey may be spatio-temporal defects

Black holes may not be what they are commonly believed to be. The authors of a new theoretical study believe that black holes may be spacio-temporal defects, so-called topological stars, that arise in hidden cosmic dimensions.

For now, the concept of topological stars is purely hypothetical, it exists only in the form of mathematical constructions. The understanding, however, could explain paradoxes in the universe that have stumped scientists, including the true nature of black holes, as well as some of the ideas advanced by string theory, which attempt to unify seemingly contradictory laws of physics into a single theory.

According to habr.com, according to string theory, the particles of the universe are vibrating strings that exist in many additional dimensions that we don't know about or see. Scientists of Johns Hopkins University have been trying for years to describe objects and phenomena that might exist in such a universe. They also described topological stars or topological solitons: they are like empty bubbles forming in the space-time fabric.  

The authors of the new study used computer simulations to show that topological solitons "would be remarkably similar to black holes in apparent size and scattering properties, while being flat and without a horizon." According to them, these hypothetical objects would look almost exactly like black holes as we can imagine them.

Despite all the possibilities of modern science and a huge amount of ongoing research, little is known about the nature of black holes. According to the current understanding of these objects, in the center of the cavity is a point of infinite density, the so-called singularity. But the problem is that, according to Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, infinitely dense regions cannot exist, which means that the idea of singularity is just a temporary notion, and science can abandon it once it finds out what's really going on inside black holes.
