OpenAI launches a ChatGPT app for iOS: What new features does it have?

May 19, 2023  10:34

The OpenAI company has released a free mobile application for iOS that integrates the ChatGPT chatbot. For now, it's only available in the US. The software supports voice input thanks to the Whisper AI speech recognition model, and can also sync chat history with the web version of the bot.

The company announced that it invites everyone to test the ChatGPT bot, which was presented to the public in November of last year. Since then, it has been improved and is now quite suitable for generating ideas, writing texts, making summaries of materials, getting advice on various issues. In addition, the bot can be used for educational purposes.

As with the ChatGPT site, users must log in to an OpenAI account. Since the processing of requests takes place on the company's server, not on the smartphone, an Internet connection is required in any case. ChatGPT Plus subscribers have access to the same features as the web version.

As the Ars Technica portal reports, during preliminary experiments, it was found that for now it is a simple but functional application, which is much more convenient to use as an application on a smartphone than to use the web version of the chatbot with a phone browser. The voice recognition system often experiences problems, but this may be due to server overload in the early stages of testing.

While the app is currently only officially available in the US, it will be rolling out to other countries in the coming weeks, and feedback will help improve the software. According to the company, the release of ChatGPT for iOS serves the purpose of transforming a virtuoso research tool into an application solution while continuing to expand its reach.

The company also confirmed that it plans to release the ChatGPT app for Android "soon," making the tool available to more users.
