About 7,800 people will be replaced by artificial intelligence։ IBM stops hiring for some positions

Arvind Krishna, head of the IBM company, announced that the company intends to stop the process of hiring new employees in a number of positions. It is expected that the work of these posts will be done by artificial intelligence in the coming years.

This will affect the human resources department, the tasks of whose employees do not involve direct contact with customers. As Bloomberg reports, it is expected that the hiring of new employees will either slow down or stop altogether. The company has about 26,000 employees whose work does not involve direct contact with customers.

According to Krishna, about 30% of those employees could easily be replaced by artificial intelligence and automation in the next five years. This may affect about 7,800 jobs, for some of which the company will simply not hire new employees. IBM now has about 260,000 employees, and the company continues to hire developers and people to work with customers.

Arvind Krishna said that more and more mundane tasks, such as preparing letters or moving employees between departments, are likely to be fully automated soon. True, many functions of the human resources department, such as finding employees, evaluating their performance, artificial intelligence may not be able to do for another decade.

At the beginning of this year, the company announced plans to lay off several thousand people. By the way, IBM is one of IT companies that created solutions based on artificial intelligence. In particular, the company's IBM Watson supercomputer and related software were used to create machine learning models as early as 10 years ago.

Now, Krishna Arvind, who took over as the head of the company in 2020, is actively engaged in optimizing the business. By the end of 2024, his actions are expected to help save up to $2 billion annually.
