Enthusiast turns Google Pixel 9 into a full-fledged laptop with 3D printing

July 13, 2026  13:07

A user from the GrapheneOS community has created an original device that turns a modern smartphone into a portable computer. The project demonstrates just how powerful flagship Android devices already can be for replacing budget laptops in everyday tasks.

How the homemade station works

The design features a modular construction, allowing individual components to be easily replaced. It includes:

  • A foldable Bluetooth keyboard
  • A wireless mouse with a separate storage compartment
  • A handle and shoulder strap mount, turning the device into a mobile workstation

The main body is manufactured using 3D printing. Inside are an external display controller, an additional battery, USB Type-C and HDMI ports, and a docking station for connecting the smartphone. Thanks to its modularity, the owner can upgrade or replace the screen, keyboard, or other elements as needed.

A special feature of the project is the use of the smartphone's built-in screen as an additional display when operating in Android Desktop mode.

Software foundation

As the operating system, the developer chose GrapheneOS — a custom version of Android focused on maximum security and privacy. The Google Pixel 9 runs in full desktop mode.

Project prospects

The developer believes that modern flagship smartphones have sufficient performance for most everyday tasks, including document work, browsing, and light editing. In the future, he plans to publish open-source designs for his projects so other enthusiasts can replicate or improve upon his developments.

In brief

An enthusiast from the GrapheneOS community has created a modular 3D-printed station that turns a Google Pixel 9 into a portable laptop. The device includes a keyboard, mouse, additional ports, and the ability to use the smartphone's screen as a second display. The project runs on GrapheneOS in Android Desktop mode. The development demonstrates that powerful smartphones can already successfully replace budget laptops in everyday scenarios. The author plans to share open designs with the community.
