Elon Musk wants to launch a million AI satellites into space. Here's how SpaceX could make it happen

SpaceX and its founder Elon Musk are actively promoting an ambitious idea to create an entire network of orbital data centers for artificial intelligence. In a new half-hour video published on the X platform, Musk detailed the company's plans to launch a massive constellation of specialized AI satellites.

Scale of the concept

According to Musk, SpaceX intends to put up to one million satellites into orbit, each equipped with powerful computing modules for AI tasks. Each satellite will feature large solar panel arrays, efficient radiator systems for heat dissipation, and high-speed laser communication links. These satellites will be able to operate in close integration with the existing Starlink network.

The company is already developing a specialized factory called Gigasat, which is expected to begin operations by the end of 2027 and reach significant production volumes. Musk stated that he considers this direction one of the key priorities for SpaceX's future.

Technical capabilities

  • Each AI satellite will generate up to 150 kW of power at peak and 120 kW continuously.
  • Launches are planned using the heavy-lift Starship rocket.
  • Onboard racks of computing modules will be connected to each other and to other satellites via laser links.

Musk emphasized that most of the necessary technology has already been refined during the development of Starlink V3 satellites, adding that he does not believe this is an overly complex task compared to what SpaceX is already doing.

Why space?

The main idea is that terrestrial data centers face serious limitations: shortage of physical space, enormous consumption of electricity and water, as well as opposition from local communities. In space, these problems are significantly reduced — there is abundant energy from the Sun, and cooling can be efficiently organized in a vacuum.

SpaceX's advantages

Musk expressed confidence that SpaceX has unique experience in managing massive satellite constellations. To date, more than 10,000 Starlink spacecraft are in orbit. He stated that this gives the company a serious advantage over competitors, adding that SpaceX has a good understanding of how to manage really large constellations safely and that it is the only operator with experience on this scale.

SpaceX's plans fit into the global race for orbital data centers. Similar projects are being developed by Google, Blue Origin, Microsoft, and a number of startups. However, SpaceX emphasizes its readiness to implement the project in the coming years.

The announcement of the plans comes as SpaceX prepares for an IPO. The company plans to list shares at $135 each, which would give it a valuation of over $1.75 trillion. Musk views orbital data centers and collaboration with xAI as key growth drivers.
