Apple is reportedly preparing a major upgrade for its flagship in-ear headphones. According to reliable insiders, the next generation of AirPods Pro — or a premium version of the AirPods Pro 3 — could feature built-in infrared cameras that would allow the earbuds to “see” the environment around the user. This could dramatically reshape usage scenarios, from gesture controls to deeper integration with Vision Pro.

What the Sources Say

The claim was first shared by prototype collector and well-known leaker Kosutami in a post on X. He stated that the new AirPods Pro would literally be able to “see around the user,” presumably thanks to tiny cameras embedded in each earbud.

His comments align with earlier reporting from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who said back in September 2025 that Apple was planning a “significant hardware upgrade” for the 2026 AirPods Pro, potentially including at least one miniature infrared camera. Kuo suggested such a camera could:

• enhance spatial audio when paired with the Vision Pro headset.

Chinese insider Instant Digital added that the device may not be a full-fledged AirPods Pro 4, but rather a premium variant of the existing AirPods Pro 3 released in 2025. Both versions could be sold in parallel, similar to how Apple currently offers two AirPods 4 models priced at $129 and $179.

Kosutami claims the new model will retain the current $249 price — the same as today’s AirPods Pro 3 — making the rumors particularly intriguing, as users would get notably more advanced features for the same cost.

However, the addition of cameras and related capabilities could also push Apple toward introducing a more expensive version positioned between the $249 AirPods Pro 3 and the $549 AirPods Max. The premium Bluetooth headphone market already includes competitors priced above $300–400, such as Bang & Olufsen, Bowers & Wilkins, and Bose, leaving clear room for an “ultra-premium” AirPods Pro tier.
