Why computer gets noisy during games and how to fix it

During intensive gaming, the load on the CPU and graphics card increases sharply, forcing the cooling system to work at full power. Fans spin up, and the noise becomes noticeable. This is normal, but if the noise level goes beyond comfort, it is worth understanding the causes and finding a solution.

Main sources of noise in a PC

The primary sources of noise inside a system unit are fans: the CPU cooler, the graphics card cooling system, and case fans. At high RPMs, their blades produce a characteristic hum. Over time, the noise can increase due to bearing wear or dust buildup.

A hard drive can also make sounds, but they are usually quiet and get lost against the background of fan noise. An exception is suspicious clicking or scraping sounds, which may indicate a failing drive.

To identify the culprit, open the side panel of the case and listen closely. A noisy fan is usually easy to detect. For accuracy, you can carefully stop a fan blade with a finger, which will reduce the noise, or use programs like SpeedFan to control fan speeds, which is safer.

Noisy CPU cooler

If the source is the CPU cooler, there can be several reasons.

Right after assembling a PC, noise often occurs because the cooling system is not powerful enough. If the CPU has a TDP of 120 W, the cooler should be rated for at least 150 W, with some headroom. In that case, even under gaming load, the fan will not run at maximum speed and will remain relatively quiet.

If the noise appeared later, dust or dried thermal paste is likely to blame. Remove the cooler, clean the heatsink and fan using compressed air or a brush. Replace the thermal paste and lubricate the fan with a few drops of machine or sewing oil, avoiding thick greases.

If this does not help, the bearing is worn out. In that case, you can replace just the fan without buying a new cooler, which is cheaper.

Noisy case fans

Case fans also spin up under load. You can limit their speed via software, but this will increase internal case temperatures.

A better solution is maintenance: clean them from dust and lubricate the bearings. If the noise persists, replace them with new ones. Case fans are inexpensive and easy to match by size.

Why the graphics card is noisy

Under gaming load, the graphics card heats up the most, and its cooler often becomes the main source of noise. Disassembling a graphics card yourself is difficult and can void the warranty.

For newer cards, stick to external cleaning: use a brush and compressed air to remove dust from the heatsink. If the noise remains, try undervolting by reducing the supplied voltage using utilities such as MSI Afterburner. Manufacturers often set voltage with a safety margin, so the FPS drop is minimal or nonexistent, while fan speeds decrease noticeably.

General recommendations

Regular PC cleaning from dust every 6 to 12 months is the best preventive measure. Use dust filters in the case, place the system unit away from carpets and walls. For gamers with a higher budget, liquid cooling systems are an option, as they are quieter than air cooling.
