How much RAM does a smartphone really need in 2026?

The year 2026 confronts smartphone users with a difficult choice. On one hand, on-device AI — from Gemini Nano to Apple Intelligence — is extremely resource-hungry, reserving 3–4 GB of memory for background tasks and on-device data processing. On the other hand, a global DRAM shortage and price increases of up to 40 percent are pushing manufacturers in the opposite direction: configurations with large amounts of memory are becoming a luxury.

Why memory is getting more expensive and disappearing

Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have redirected production capacity toward HBM for AI servers, which is far more profitable. Smartphones have become a lower priority. As a result, 16–24 GB of RAM may almost disappear from the mass market, 12 GB will become a privilege of top-tier versions, and even base flagships may drop to 8 GB.

The mid-range and budget segments will suffer the most. If 8–12 GB was the norm in 2024–2025, then in 2026 the standard will shift toward 6 GB, and in cheaper models to 4 GB. Brands will actively promote virtual RAM, expanding memory via storage, to make specifications look more attractive, but in practice this will not replace physical memory.

How much RAM is actually needed

For most everyday tasks — messaging apps, web browsing, video, social networks — 8 GB will be more than enough even in 2026. This allows comfortable background multitasking with around a dozen apps, basic AI features such as translation and photo editing, and casual gaming.

Twelve gigabytes is a reasonable minimum for enthusiasts. This level suits demanding games at high settings, professional 8K video recording, advanced AI use such as local image generation and complex assistants, and serious multitasking. If you frequently edit video, work with RAW photos, or use emulators, this is the right choice.

Sixteen gigabytes and above will remain a niche option for gaming phones like the ROG Phone or RedMagic, or for professional devices. For most users, the extra cost will not be justified.

What to choose in 2026

If your budget allows, choosing 12 GB in a flagship device provides a reserve for the next two to three years, as AI continues to consume more resources. For everyday use, 8 GB in the mid-range segment is sufficient. Six gigabytes or less is only reasonable if the smartphone is used mainly for calls and messaging.

Virtual RAM can help in simple scenarios, but it will not save the situation in demanding ones. Physical memory is always faster and more reliable.
