40 professions AI may replace — and 40 that are safe (for now)

Microsoft Research has published a list of 40 professions most vulnerable to automation by artificial intelligence (AI), based on an analysis of 200,000 anonymous conversations with the Copilot chatbot in the U.S. over nine months in 2024. The study, focused on the American job market, identifies which tasks AI is already handling effectively and outlines jobs that may be partially or fully replaced in the near future. At the same time, researchers highlighted 40 professions that remain relatively safe — at least for now — due to the need for physical presence or complex human skills that AI cannot yet replicate.

Jobs at Risk

Microsoft examined how closely job tasks align with the capabilities of generative AI like Copilot. The focus was on tasks involving information processing, text creation, and communication. Here are the 40 professions identified as most vulnerable:

These jobs are at risk because their core tasks — writing, communication, data analysis — are already being performed efficiently by AI. For example, translators scored the highest "AI applicability index" (0.49), as 98% of their tasks matched Copilot requests such as text translation. Similarly, journalists and editors are exposed, since AI can now generate and edit content with increasing quality.

That said, Microsoft researchers emphasize that AI is not replacing entire professions — yet. According to senior researcher Kieran Tomlinson, AI tends to automate routine tasks like drafting or research, altering the nature of work rather than eliminating it altogether.

Why These Jobs Are Vulnerable

AI excels at tasks involving:

As a result, some employers may downsize teams where AI proves to be a cheaper alternative. For instance, Microsoft itself laid off over 15,000 employees in 2025, offloading many of their tasks to AI systems.

Still, the technology has limitations. AI is prone to “hallucinations” (fabricating facts), which reduces its reliability in accuracy-critical roles such as journalism or academic research. Also, roles that depend on intuition, emotion, or cultural sensitivity remain difficult for AI to replicate fully.

Jobs That Are Still Safe

On the flip side, Microsoft identified 40 jobs least susceptible to automation, mostly due to the need for physical presence, manual dexterity, or complex interpersonal interaction:

These roles are currently resistant to automation because neither AI nor robotics can yet adequately replicate the physical agility, situational adaptability, and on-the-spot problem solving they require. For example, plumbers are considered AI-proof due to the unpredictability and customization needed for each task.

However, the researchers warn that advancements in robotics may eventually encroach on some of these areas — particularly transportation and logistics, such as truck driving.

Economic and Social Impact

Microsoft’s study also highlights the potential for growing inequality. Jobs most exposed to AI tend to pay better — averaging $33.30/hour — compared to less exposed roles, which average $20/hour. Also, 27% of workers with college degrees are in high-risk jobs, compared to only 3% of those without degrees, suggesting a shift in risk toward traditionally well-educated professions.

But the researchers also see opportunity: just like ATMs didn’t eliminate banking jobs but reshaped them, AI could spawn entirely new career paths related to development, oversight, and ethical use of AI. They urge investment in retraining and development of digital literacy, critical thinking, and AI management skills to ensure workers stay competitive.

Bottom Line

Microsoft's research paints a clear picture: AI is already transforming the labor market, especially in roles involving writing, analysis, and communication. Jobs like translators, journalists, and marketers face growing pressure from automation. Meanwhile, physically intensive or interpersonal professions like construction, nursing, or cleaning remain relatively safe.

However, full replacement is unlikely in the near future. AI will more often reshape roles, demanding adaptability and new skill sets from workers. Whether AI becomes a helpful tool or a major disruptor depends largely on how businesses, workers, and policymakers respond to the coming changes.

The key question remains: will AI become a co-pilot or a competitor in the workplace of tomorrow?
