End of an era: Sony to stop producing Blu-ray and other optical media

Sony has announced that it will completely stop producing optical storage media, including Blu-ray Disc (BD), MiniDisc, MD Data, and MiniDV tapes. According to 3DNews, the media will cease production in February, marking the end of an era of physical data storage.

Reasons for the end of production

• Declining demand: Streaming services have almost completely replaced physical media, making commercial production of optical discs unprofitable.
• Changing focus: In mid-2024, Sony already stopped producing consumer Blu-ray discs, leaving lines only for the corporate sector. Now these lines will also be closed.

History of Blu-ray Disc

• Creation: The first prototype of Blu-ray was introduced in 2000 as a replacement for DVD.
• Format war: BD competed with Toshiba's HD DVD, but won thanks to the support of movie studios and integration into the PlayStation 3.
