Powerful sun flare triggers rare phenomenon that was last seen in 1942

March 28, 2024  17:10

Scientists of the National Research Nuclear University of the Russian Federation have recorded a rare natural phenomenon - an abnormal sharp increase in the muon flux of cosmic rays, which was caused by a powerful flare on the Sun. TASS news agency, reports this with reference to the press service of the university.

As the press service emphasized, Russian scientists were the first in the world to report this phenomenon. An increase in the rate of cosmic ray muon counting was observed on March 23, 2024 at 01:40 UTC (05:40 Yerevan time). Scientists observed a maximum increase in muon flux between 01:39 and 01:44.

The phenomenon called GLE occurs as a result of powerful flares on the Sun and is very rare. Since 1942, scientists have recorded 73 such cases. According to the Russian National Research Nuclear University, GLE-74 is the result of an X1.1 solar flare that occurred at 01:33.

Let's remind that a powerful flare occurred on the Sun a few days ago.
